Homeless people share their life stories: Rebecca, Andrew, Jazmin, Elle and Melissa.
Street Outreach

The Problem

No matter where homeless people go they are treated like social outcasts – even support services designed to serve them treat them as welfare clients. The experience is institutionalizing and debilitating.

It becomes very clear to someone who is homeless ‘this is who you are’ and ‘this is where you fit.’ There is no grey area, homeless people simply don’t belong.

True homelessness is about this experience of being an ‘outsider,’ of being lonely and having no one in your life.
Street Outreach Program

A small group of volunteers from Rebeccas Commmunity maintain connections with homeless people in Kings Cross, through regular contact we build connectedness.

At present we are raising money to purchase an outreach van, from which we can create a gathering space where 50 or more homeless people can meet, each night with a team of 20 volunteers.

This meeting point will help break down the social barriers and offer an experience of being welcomed, accepted and believed in.

The Rebeccas Community Street Outreach Van will stay parked in the one place for two or more hours, welcoming homeless people with a hot cuppa and a friendly welcome. The focus of the Street Outreach Van will be on developing connections, friendships and taking time out from the street environment.

In Christ’s love we strive to:
Accept their individuality,
Believe in their worth,
Hope for their future, and
Love them where they are.

We are not there to fix them or change them or mainstream homeless people… just to meet the person and take time to hear about how their day was and share our lives with them.

Safe Body Language
image: Art Image 5
Using Body Language

Using body language (eye contact, posture, touch, facial expressions) can be a good way of letting someone know you are interested in them or are feeling confident in a situation. As everyone’s experience is different, there are a number of things you may want to consider:

Personal Space – Everyone is different when it comes to feeling comfortable with the amount of space left between themselves and someone else. Generally speaking, the closer you stand to someone the more intimate the relationship. It is a good idea to be aware of your personal space and if you don’t feel comfortable with the distance left between you and someone else, it may help to step back a little. Being aware of the reactions of someone else is also important.

Touch – In some situations it may be appropriate to touch someone as a sign of comfort, interest, or friendship. Be careful touching someone you don’t know very well. If you’re wanting to offer your support or letting someone know you are interested, putting your hand on their shoulder or arm may be appropriate. It may be helpful to remember that the less you know about someone’s experience, the harder it is to gauge whether it is appropriate to touch them.
What Can I Do if I Don’t Feel Safe?

If you feel uneasy about how someone is talking to you or behaving towards you, it is a good idea to let someone know what is going on. This may be a friend, family member, teacher or the police. Talking to someone can help you to work out how best to manage the situation.

Remember that the police are available 24 hours if you are in an emergency. Kids Help line 1800 55 1800 and life line 131 114 also have counsellors available 24 hours if you need to speak to someone.

Consent and Sex

Going out with someone or being in a relationship can make you feel many different things – happiness, nervousness, excitement, love. Sometimes it can also be confusing, especially when it comes to intimacy and sex. Intimacy is when two people become physically, sexually and/or emotionally close.

It can be hard to know if the person you’re with wants to be more intimate with you or not. Sometimes it’s hard to ask or find out how the other person is feeling. It’s important that the person you’re with gives their consent to the level of intimacy you have with them.
What Does Consent Mean in Intimate Relationships?

Consent is when one person agrees to or gives permission to another person to do something. It means agreeing to an action based on your knowledge of what that action involves, its likely consequences and having the option of saying no. When it comes to sex in your relationship consent is really important. It’s important to remember that both of you have a responsibility to make sure that you both feel safe and comfortable every step along the way. Remember, your actions towards the person you’re with can greatly affect the way they feel about you, themselves, the relationship and sex in general.
Why is it Important to Make Sure that the Person You’re With Has Given Consent?

It’s important that you are sure that the person you’re with is happy and comfortable because non-consensual sexual activity (anything from touching and kissing to penetration) is against the law. The punishments for sexual assault are severe. Not only is it a crime, but also the emotional consequences of rape and sexual assault can last a lifetime.

See the fact sheet about Sexual Assault.

There are many legal issues around sex and consent. The laws in some states may differ. To find out more about the laws in your state visit www.lawstuff.org.au
How do you Know if the Person You’re With has Given Their Consent?

The only way to know for sure if someone has given consent is if they tell you. It’s not always easy to let people know that you are not happy about something. Sometimes the person you’re with might look like they’re happy doing something but on the inside they’re not. They might not know what to say or how to tell you that they are uncomfortable. One of the best ways to determine if someone is uncomfortable with any situation, especially with a sexual one, is to simply ask. Here are some examples of the questions you might ask:

• Is there anything that you don’t want to do?
• Are you happy with this?
• Are you comfortable?
• Do you want to stop?
• Do you want to go further?
Recognising Non-Verbal Communication

There are many ways of communicating. The look on someone’s face and their body language is also a way of communicating and often has more meaning then the words that come out of their mouth. Here are some ways body language can let you know if the person you’re with is not comfortable with what is happening

• Not responding to your touch
• Pushing you away
• Holding their arms tightly around their bodies
• Turning away from you or hiding their face
• Stiffening muscles

For more info see the Body Language fact sheet.

Asking questions and being aware of body language helps you to figure out if the person you’re with is consenting and feeling comfortable or not consenting and feeling uncomfortable. If you get a negative or non-committal answer to any of these questions or if your partner’s body language is like any of the above examples then you should stop what you are doing and talk to them about it.
Kissing Doesn’t Always Need to Lead to Sex

There are different types of intimacy, like holding hands, writing love notes, kissing, hugging, massage, and actually having sex. Different people will be willing to go to different types and try different things. You might enjoy kissing, but not feel ready to have sex. Or you might have had sex before and not feel like it every time you kiss. Kissing and getting intimate does not need to lead to sex. That’s why it’s important to communicate how you are feeling. Every time you engage in intimate or sexual activity it is really important that you and the person you’re with is comfortable with what’s happening.

Everyone has the right to say ‘no’ and everyone has the right to change their mind at any time regardless of their past experiences with other people or the person they are with.
Slowing Things Down

Taking your time, making sure you are both comfortable and talking about how far you want to go will make the time you spend together a lot more satisfying and enjoyable for both of you.

Sometimes things move very quickly. Below are some things you can say to slow things down if you feel that things are going too quickly.

• I don’t want to go any further than kissing, hugging, touching.
• Can we stay like this for while?
• Can we slow down?

This may also be a good opportunity to bring up contraception and safe sex with the person you are with. See the fact sheets on Safe Sex and Relationships for more info. What if the Person You’re With is Too Out of it to Give Consent?

Drugs and alcohol can affect people’s ability to make decisions, including whether or not they want to be sexual with someone else. This means that if someone is really out of it, they cannot give consent. Being with them in a sexual way when they don’t know what’s going on is the same as rape.

If you see a friend who is out of it and is being intimate with someone then you should pull them aside and try your best to make sure that the person is safe and knows what they are doing. If it’s the opposite situation, and your friend is the one who is with the out of it person then you should try to pull them aside and stop them from getting themselves into trouble. For more info on drugs and alcohol see these fact sheets.
You Decide

Your experiences are what shape you and your actions can have either positive or negative consequences on your life and the lives of others. The keys to having good relationships are trust, good communication, understanding and honesty. Finding out more about relationships and friendships is an excellent way to make sure that you have good ones. A good place to start is to have a look at the fact sheet Thinking About First Time Sex. A lot of the stuff in that fact sheet is relevant throughout your relationship.

If you have any questions or you just need to talk then check out the links below. They are all confidential – that means you don’t have to tell anyone who you are and they won’t tell anyone that you have contacted them.
Running Away – Where 2 turn
4 help b4 u r Homeless

This is for anyone aged up to 13 years old
who is thinking about running away

[left] 9yr old homeless boy Dominic [right]
Dominic Mapstone

Hi my name is Dominic,

I help runaways and homeless people in Sydney Australia but this is for anyone aged up to 13 years old who is thinking about running away or would like to know more about homelessness.

HomelessI know you have a very good reason for wanting to runaway.

The Top 10 reasons why other kids have run away are:

   1. Kicked out – Mostly the reason why kids leave home isn’t because they ‘runaway,’ it is because they get kicked out.
2. Sexual Abuse – someone in your house is made to do sexual things, maybe you.
3. Violence – someone in your house gets hurt a lot, maybe you.
4. Alcohol or Drugs – someone in your house drinks alcohol lots or uses drugs to get high.
5. Verbal Abuse – people yell or scream at you all the time.
6. Neglect – you don’t get basic stuff other kids do, like food or it may be as if you aren’t even there and no one cares about you.
7. Crime – someone in your house does crime like stealing from people or beating them up.
8. Stress – someone is always on your case putting pressure on you to do something all the time like cleaning up or doing your homework.
9. School – you get bullied at school and can’t put up with it anymore or you get in really big trouble at school and just can’t go home because of what might happen when your parents find out.
10. Someone is Gone – this could be because they died, or your patents get divorced or separated. It also could be an older brother or sister moved out of home.

Everyone is different! These are some reasons, but everyone has their own reason.

All these things are bad and you should do something about it. But running away can be worse!

What you can do:

There are two kinds of adults / grown ups who can make things better:

   1. Someone you know and trust (examples are: a teacher, school guidance officer, an auntie or uncle, grandparents or someone you know from the neighbourhood). How to get them to help: ask to talk to them about a secret away from anyone else. Tell them what is happening and ask for their help.
2. Someone whose job is to help kids like you (examples are: police, telephone help lines, child welfare workers). How to get them to help: the good thing about asking these people for help is they are on your side! It is their job to protect you and help you be safe and happy. Most of the time it is free to phone a help line or the police; you just have to find out what number to call.
3. Ask in the Forum for Advice: You can ask in the Homeless Forum where streetkids and homeless people as well as Social Workers can answer your questions or just have a chat: Homeless Forum

Here are the best phone numbers to call around the world:

They are Confidential – which means they won’t tell anyone about your call unless you want them to talk to somebody for you, or you are in danger.

They are open 24 Hours – it doesn’t matter what time you call them, there will always be someone there. Sometimes the line is busy, you just have to call back again.
Homeless Shelters

What number to call:

Get a pen and paper when you call them:

As they may have another phone number or other stuff you want to write down.

Leaving Home
Getting Prepared to Leave Home

Many people will eventually leave the home they grew up in and find a home of their own. However, everyone is different. Some people leave home when they are very young, others wait till they are in their thirties, and some people live with their family all their lives.
Reasons for Leaving Home

There are many reasons why people think about moving out of home. Often people first think about leaving home if they are in conflict with their parents. Sometimes the thought of leaving seems easier than resolving the conflict. Sometimes young people may be told to move out because for some parents it may seem easier than resolving the conflict. For others it may be the need for more space or privacy that makes them think about leaving. Sometimes people move away from home in order to go to school, to TAFE or university, or for a job.
What if my Parents Don’t Want me to Move Out?

Some families believe that their children should only move out when they are married or have their own property. Some parents often feel rejected or even embarrassed about what other people may think of them as parents. For example, the idea that people will think they are ‘bad parents’ or that there is conflict within the household, all ideas that might have nothing to do with the real reason for moving out.
Leaving Home

When you begin to plan leaving home it is a good idea to think through the consequences and your needs. Some things to think through before deciding to leave home may include:

Do I Have Somewhere Safe to Live?

If you are over 18 and have a stable income you can probably either move into shared accomodation with friends or look to renting your own place. If you are under 18, you may find that it is difficult to rent a house or sign a lease because of your age. You can check with a local community legal centre or a tenants’ rights organisation about your rights in regard to this. If you are leaving home because of family conflict or abuse, then there are refuges and supported accommodation services that may be available to you. Ring a local community welfare or health organisation to find out more about services available in your area.

Do I Have Enough Money to Support Myself?

Try working out a budget to see how much money you need each week to pay the rent and buy what you need.

If you do not have a job or are still studying you may be eligible for social security payments. Contact your nearest Centrelink officer to find out what benefits you are eligible to receive.

Who Would Support Me in Making the Move?

Often leaving home is easiest if your family will assist and support you in making the move. If your immediate family will not support you, you may have friends or relatives who will. There may also be services available that provide assistance with moving, material goods, and food vouchers in your local area. Contact your local youth service for further information or the Kids Help Line (1800 55 1800).
